Eirgrid says it will continue to engage with local communities on the North-South Interconnector to ensure they know why the project must go ahead.

Planning approval for the northern section of the project was granted yesterday, almost four years after it was granted in the south.

However, many locally remain opposed to the interconnector being placed overground using pylons.

The North East Pylon Pressure group last night said "pressure is now back on the Government to demand an underground compromise solution".

Communications Minister Eamon Ryan yesterday welcomed the planning approval but said Eirgrid needs "to fully and openly engage with communities along the route" to ensure "its benefits are understood by and shared with those living closest to the route".
