Local Councillor hits out at EirGrid's "idle threat" over interconnector

A Monaghan Councillor has hit out at EirGrid's claim that there is "no alternative" to over-grounding the North-South Interconnector.

EirGrid Chief Executive Mark Foley told councillors at a meeting yesterday that it was "over-grounding or nothing" regarding the project.

However, Fianna Fáil Councillor Seamus Coyle has called this "an idle threat".

He says 584 access points across Cavan, Meath, and Monaghan are required for the project.

However, Councillor Seamus Coyle claims there has been no consultation over where these access points will be.

Speaking to Shannonside Northern Sound, he added that EirGrid's Chief Executive "admitted" future technological advancements could allow for the undergrounding of the interconnector:
