A Monaghan Councillor has called for the County Council to buy land in local villages to provide serviced sites for house building.
Independent Paudge Connolly has called for a review to be undertaken into land zoned for housing in the county.
While he says he "respects" the rights of land owners to keep zoned land for as long as they wish, he's concerned that the Council is "zoning land that will never be built on".
He added that the Council "can't afford the luxury of waiting for the next County Development Plan" to address the issue, and urged the Council to take quicker and more decisive action.
One solution he put forward was for the Council to purchase land with a view to providing electricity and water services so the serviced sites can be sold.
This would remove a cost burden on people building their own home.
