Local Professor warns foreign travel could import new strains of Covid-19

Sam McConkey says domestic holidays this summer would be the safest option.

A local infectious disease specialist has warned that foreign travel could put Ireland at risk of a new strain of Covid-19.

The Tanaiste, Leo Varadkar, has said he will be making a case for travel restrictions to be eased between Ireland and the UK this summer.

The Government is currently looking at what the reopening of international travel will look like and how it will work.

While Monaghan Professor Sam McConkey says travel to Britain could be possible due to the vaccination programme there, he added that domestic holidays would prevent the possibility of a "fourth wave".

Speaking on this morning's Joe Finnegan Show, Professor McConkey said "opening everything up is not good for public health":
