The additional bedrooms planned for the M Hotel in Carrickmacross will not be used to house asylum seekers.
A spokesperson for the hotel said works are for welcoming back guests and they will not begin until after the current residents have been moved to alternative permanent accommodation.
Monaghan County Council recently approved permission for the development of another 50 bedrooms at the hotel formally known as Treacy's.
This is to be achieved by changing the use of a first-floor events room, and a ground floor storage room.
The planning applicant said the purpose of the works was to "improve the viability of the hotel for use as a hotel".
Currently, it is providing emergency accommodation for the International Protection Office.
A spokesperson for the hotel told Northern Sound News that the additional rooms are not intended to be used by those seeking asylum in Ireland.
It's understood the Government has begun the process of moving residents of the hotel into permanent accommodation across Ireland, which is estimated to be completed within eighteen months.
The hotel spokesperson said works will only begin after that time, and the intention is to allow them to accommodate more coach tours when trade returns to pre-Covid levels.
