A Monaghan Councillor says it's "totally impossible to close the border", amid calls for a buffer zone to be implemented between Northern Ireland and the Republic.

The Independent Scientific Advocacy Group has written to the Government, asking for stricter public health controls to be implemented.

One of its recommendations is a "red zone" in border areas with high levels of infection, which would be surrounded by a "buffer zone" between ten and thirty kilometres wide.

However, Councillor Seamus Treanor says he "would never be in favour of closing the border", adding that "we have to see north and south as one unit".

He told The Joe Finnegan Show that the focus should instead be on ports and airports, rather than the border:
