Monaghan County Council has passed a motion calling on Irish Water to clarify how it decides upon costs for new connection charges.
Councillor Pat Treanor says some people have been quoted €70,000 for a connection and added that Irish Water should "take on the responsibility of extending its supply lines".
The Sinn Féin councillor told a recent county council meeting that many water connections run along main roads in rural Ireland and that it's unfair for individuals to pay for "basic infrastructure" that should already be in place.
