Monaghan County Council have no plans to acquire more derelict sites

There are grants available for property owners to fund works on derelict sites, but "people are not taking it up".

Monaghan County Council's Head of Finance says there are no plans to acquire more derelict sites until "we complete what we currently have on our hands".

At a recent MD meeting, Sinn Féin's Sean Conlon, asked if the Council was considering "acquiring derelict sites that have been an eyesore for many decades".

Head of Finance, John Murray, noted that there is a difference between "unsightly" and "derelict" buidlings, and added that there would be funding issues if the Council made a "financial commitment" to acquire properties that they had no plans for.

Councillor Sean Conlon asked that letters be sent to the owners of derelict buildings to "get them to do something" with the property.

However, Mr Murray said contact had been made "with a lot of property owners to get them to do up their buildings".

He added that the Council has made these property owners aware of grants that can be availed of to fund the works, but "people are not taking it up".
